Boudoir: More than Pretty Pictures

“Just because someone's pretty doesn't mean she's decent. Or vice versa. I'm not into appearances. I like flaws, I think they make things interesting.”
Sarah Dessen, The Truth About Forever

What do you think of when you hear the term “boudoir”? Intimate photos? Lingerie? Another fancy French word? A lady’s private bedroom (the actual meaning)? There are numerous answers to this question, but very few come close to what it means for photographers.

Back in the 1980’s, my mom (and yours, most likely) had what was called “Glamour Shots”. She got all dolled up with fantastic blue eyeshadow and puffed up bangs and fancy outfits and had her photos taken. I thought these were the best things ever. The most beautiful images in the world, until I was like 13 and realized that no, that wasn't actually my mom in those photos. She didn't wear a rhinestoned cowboy hat with blue eyeshadow… so who was I looking at? I was looking at the woman my mom thought she should be, the same as every other woman who had these images taken. They were, essentially, playing dress up and having their photographs taken, pretending to be someone else. I could never understand what was so wrong with just being yourself, but hey, I was only 13.

As a mom now myself, I look in the mirror and wish I could play dress up, too. Put on pretty clothes and have someone magically erase all of my flaws with makeup and retouching and make me look like I did 15 years ago. But it would be fake, and in the end I know it would only hurt my self esteem ever more than my stretch marks already do.

This is why I began my dive into boudoir photography, to show women, real women, how beautiful they are. But wait, I know you’re wondering now what the hell boudoir is, if it isn’t getting dressed up and feeling pretty….? Boudoir is more than just pretty pictures. Boudoir is empowerment. Read that again… Boudoir. Is. Empowerment.

Every woman, every mother, daughter, grandmother deserves to feel fabulous and powerful and epic and that is what boudoir is meant to accomplish. Sure, the experience results in some sexy images to show off, but the actual experience is what is so freeing. A day to be free of commitments to others, to embrace being a woman instead of all of our other titles (wife, mother, etc…) and simply explore our own self is something that every woman deserves. You will laugh, feel like a complete idiot at some points “because really, how can this pose look sexy?” but in the end, you will see yourself as others see you and as you deserve to be seen, one powerful fucking woman.

So, yes, boudoir photography results in some pretty pictures but it is SO MUCH MORE than that! It is empowerment, self-love, and realizing your strength as a woman. So the next time someone posts some boudoir images, realize the depth of their power, and comment on how amazing they truly are as a woman!

Self Tanner Tips!

Who doesn’t love a true bronze look during the summer? I live in Florida and let me tell you, those dark tans are something i’ve always been envious of when those girls walk by, me over here all Irish-white and pale… but who can afford a good (and I mean a GOOD) spray tan?! It takes weeks to get to the right color to only have it fade away. And we all know by now that tanning beds are a no-go unless you want skin cancer.

Well, I have two friends who each are in direct marketing companies who have their own self-tanning lotions. I thought I would give them a try to see whose was the best… ready for some results?

The first company is Pure Romance (of whom I am a die hard fan and loyal customer, by the way!). Their self tanner is Coco Glow and comes in two shades so we can get a natural look. It costs $30 and you can purchase it from an Independent Consultant or online (support small business!). It goes on just like a white cream lotion, so it’s difficult to tell where you’ve applied and how much, so be careful. It takes a few minutes to dry, and then about 4 hours to start appearing. The results were amazing! Very natural and smooth, and the few places I smudged up (because let’s face it, I suck at this), I simply exfoliated away until it looked normal again. Definitely will use this tanner again! It lasted several days, and there was enough in the bottle to do several applications on my legs, so the price wasn’t too bad, either.

The second company I used was NuSkin. This bottle was actually a gift from a friend (thanks, again!) but costs about the same at $33. You can also order online or through an Independent Consultant (go support a local small business!). The great thing about this tanner is that it goes on bronze! You know exactly where you’ve applied it, how much, and you get an instant shimmer to your skin while you wait for the color to appear. The end result was, again, very natural and lasted a few days. However, this tanner only comes in one shade, so be careful my Irish friends!

In the end, I would recommend BOTH self tanners over anything I’ve tried from CVS or any other drugstore brand self tanner. The results are worth the $30 price tag!

Want to know how I applied the self tanner? Here’s my process!

  1. Shower and shave!

  2. Exfoliate! I use a bamboo shower sponge.

  3. Exfoliate again! NuSkin does carry an AMAZING exfoliant called Body Lufra I use before I applied the self tanner.

  4. Be sure you’re completely dry (like stand in front of a fan or walk around naked for a few minutes, seriously).

  5. Apply self tanner to desired areas.

  6. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP!!!!! No, I don’t use gloves because I can’t feel where I’ve applied the lotion. Yes, I have acrylic nails. I just use lots of hot water and soap immediately afterwards, and be sure not to drip on yourself while drying your hands!

  7. Walk around naked again (stand in front of a fan if you have one!) to be sure you get 100% dry.

  8. Congrats! You have just self-tanned yourself. Now go put on a bathing suit (or sundress or whatever outfit you did this for) and enjoy!

Why Boudoir?

A Boudoir Experience allow us to slow down, focus on ourselves, and show our true inner power of what being a women truly is, for even just a brief moment.

For the 30-something mom who’s life revolves around chicken nuggets, macaroni, and baseball. For the 45-something woman in her prime but works too much. For the 60-something woman who isn’t ready to slow down just yet.

For the teacher; the police office; the banker; the waitress. For every woman who is too tired at the end of the day to cook herself the meal she deserves and instead settles for a bottle of cheap wine and a piece of chocolate.

My goal through Alluring Blush Boudoir is to encourage women to embrace their inner goddesses and realize they're not defined by how society sees them, but how they see themselves.

“Your most powerful attribute is that you, darling, are a women. Use it, and bring every man to his knees”. - Anonymous
